Common Core Reading: Informational Text

This course focuses on what the Common Core State Standards expect when teaching informational text. States that participate in the Common Core require standardized tests to monitor student progress. One of these tests is the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessment. Let’s begin by watching a quick video on how the PARCC test assesses the Common Core reading standards.

We’ll start out by identifying the shifts in Common Core ELA instruction for Informational Text.

  1. Highlight “shifts” that make Common Core expectations different from previous standards.
  2. Understand what is at the heart of these shifts and why they are important.
  3. Learn how to integrate Common Core teaching with proven instructional practices.
  4. Develop a unit around a topic or issue to build content knowledge.
