Welcome to the Common Core Language course from Green Light Professional Development!
In the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), the Language Standards are presented as their own strand to articulate the level of sophistication with which students in each grade should be able to use language. However, CCSS insists that these skills should not be understood, or taught, in isolation. There is a complex relationship between both the Language standards for different grade levels AND the language standards and other English Language Arts (ELA) Standards. These complex relationships communicate expectations for teaching the standards, and they inform the way assessments test these skills—in conjunction with other standards.
In this course, we’ll identify the progression of the language standards across the grade levels, and across the other ELA strands of reading, writing, and speaking and listening. We’ll also take an in-depth look at how one test—PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers)—assesses language skills, and how you can integrate the Language standards with other ELA Standards in everyday instruction. The course ends with a hands-on workshop that gives you time to modify a lesson plan or create a new lesson plan that integrates language standards with a reading/writing task.
Let’s look at how language is assessed on the PARCC test.
